US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order defining marijuana at the federal level as a less dangerous drug, in an effort to increase research into its medical use, but not to fully legalize it, reports CNN.
Marijuana, which is legal in many American federal states, was previously classified at the federal level in the first category of the most dangerous drugs, like heroin. Trump placed it in the third category, along with anabolic steroids and ketamine.
“This reclassification order will greatly facilitate the conduct of medical research related to marijuana, allowing us to study the benefits, potential dangers and future treatments,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “It will have an extremely positive impact.”
The order, which directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to speed up the process of easing federal restrictions but does not include a time frame, comes after an intense lobbying campaign by the cannabis industry, according to senior administration officials.
“The facts force the federal government to recognize that marijuana can have a legitimate medical use when used carefully. In some cases, that may include use as a substitute for addictive and potentially deadly opioid painkillers,” Trump said, calling the move “common sense.”
Trump’s action does not legalize marijuana at the federal level, although moreć legal in several countries. The regulation does not affect the use of marijuana for recreational purposes and does not include any changes in criminal justice.
