Rubio says the relationship between the US and Brazil follows a “positive trajectory”

The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, said this Friday (19), during a press conference with journalists, that President Donald Trump and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had “good rapport” in conversations and stated that the relationship between the United States and Brazil follows a “positive” trajectory, with advances in topics such as bilateral trade.

Rubio recalled that Trump had two telephone conversations with Lula and a diplomatic meeting, in which progress was made on some “common agenda points”, especially in the commercial area.

“We have made progress on some issues, including trade. There is still work to be done,” said the secretary.

Rubio said that the good personal relationship between Trump and Lula was considered “relevant” for the progress of the talks.

“The two presidents got along well. We think this is important in the context of these conversations,” he declared.

Rubio said he held talks this week with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. At the time, he said he spoke with the Brazilian chancellor about the “good harmony” between Trump and Lula.

“We have many issues in common with Brazil that we would like to work on together, as well as strong ties. Being from Florida, for example, I know how important Brazil has been for us as a partner,” said Rubio.

The statements come after recent decisions by the Trump administration that directly impacted the bilateral relationship. Last week, the United States Treasury Department removed the names of Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes, the Lex Institute of Legal Studies and Viviane Barci de Moraes, the minister’s wife, from the list of those sanctioned based on the Magnitsky Law. According to official information, the names were no longer included on the Ofac website following requests made by President Lula in conversations with Trump.

Before that, Trump had revoked the 40% additional tariff on Brazilian meat, coffee and other agricultural products. The move added to the previous withdrawal of 10% reciprocal trade tariffs applied to US partners.

Despite the positive tone regarding relations, Rubio stated that there is, for now, no specific information about Brazil’s role in relation to Venezuela.

“As for Brazil’s role in Venezuela, I have nothing specific to offer today,” said the secretary, indicating that the topic was not covered in detail in recent conversations.
