The US has carried out massive strikes on IS targets in Syria

The US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes and ground operations in Syria in recent months against Islamic State militants, often with the involvement of Syrian security forces.

President Donald Trump promised retribution after American soldiers were killed in an alleged Islamic State attack in Syria last weekend.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegsett said the strikes targeted “IS militants, infrastructure and weapons emplacements” and called the operation “Operation Hawkeye,” according to Reuters news agency.

“This is not the beginning of a war, this is a declaration of revenge. Today we hunted down and killed our enemies. Many (of enemies). And we will continue,” Hegsett said.

Trump wrote on the social network that the Syrian government fully supports the strikes. During a speech in North Carolina, the US president described the operation as a “massive” strike against IS members and assured that it was very successful.

The US Central Command announced that more than seven dozen targets were struck in the center of Syria. American F-15 and A-10 military aircraft, Apache helicopters and HIMARS missile systems were involved in the operation, Jordanian military aircraft supported the operation.

In a statement from the Foreign Ministry, Syria reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the fight against the Islamic State and assured that the terrorist group “has no safe haven in Syrian territory.”

On December 13, an attack on a convoy of American and Syrian troops in the central Syrian city of Palmyra killed two American servicemen and a civilian interpreter, and wounded three other American soldiers. The attacker was killed.
