Waleed Khan, 26, of Toronto, is accused of a series of terrorist offenses and two attempted kidnappings, the Canadian authorities announced. According to the local police announcement from yesterday (Friday), he planned to harm women and members of the Jewish community. He carried out the kidnapping attempts together with two other young men, starting at the end of May.

Khan, an ISIS supporter, is accused of giving money and property to the terrorist organization, assisting its activities and conspiring to commit murder. Two other people were arrested on suspicion of planning kidnapping attacks with him – Osman Azizov, 18 years old, and Fahad Sadat, 19 years old.

According to the police, the kidnapping attempts are what led to the investigation of the three men. “The investigation identified alleged offenses that were motivated, among other things, by hate-driven extremism with potential ties to terrorism,” said Myron Demkiou, Toronto Police Chief.

The mayor of Toronto praised the police activity, and thanked the officers for “their continued vigilance that keeps us safe.”

The first attempted kidnapping by the three was held on May 31. They threatened a woman with a gun and ordered her to get into their car. However, they fled the scene after she screamed for help.

The second kidnapping attempt was made about a month later. This time, the three men tried to kidnap two women. According to the police, “one of them may have had a gun and the other a knife.” A passerby intervened – and prevented the kidnappings.

The three men were arrested in August. A police search of Khan’s home resulted in additional evidence that, according to the police, “confirms his involvement in threats related to national security.” In total, 79 charges were filed against the three men.
