Pope Leo XIV has appointed new archbishops in the United States, most of whom are critical of President Trump’s immigration policies. At least ten of the 13 newly appointed leaders, including the new archbishop of New York, have publicly condemned the White House’s anti-immigration policy, some calling it draconian, others calling for due process.
A close adviser to the Catholic Church’s pontiff told Reuters the appointments show that the treatment of immigrants is now part of the Church’s fundamental position that life is sacred from conception to death.
Earlier, last September, the Pope of Rome emphasized that the protection of human life is not only about the fight against abortion, which is often announced by conservative Republicans.
“Is someone who is against abortion, but according to the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the United States, really advocates for life,” the Pope of Rome asked in a conversation with journalists.
President Trump, who once called the late Pope Francis “disrespectful” for criticizing his immigration policies, has so far not responded to Leo XIV’s criticisms and staff appointments.
