“In order to preserve the lives of our soldiers and the combat capability of the units, the Ukrainian defenders withdrew from the town. The Ukrainian defense forces exhausted the enemy during the fighting for Siversk, every meter of the city was ceded to the enemy at a high price,” he admitted.

Russian soldiers were able to advance due to their numerical advantage and the pressure they constantly exerted with small assault groups in adverse weather conditions, according to the Ukrainian General Staff.

The city remains within range of Ukrainian artillery, the note concluded, which assured that the Russian occupiers in Siversk are being defeated within the city and isolated from their supply routes.

The Kremlin reported the achievement on December 11 at the end of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and senior military officials.

Analysts consider that the fall of Siversk paves the way for the advance of Russian forces towards the bastions of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, both in Donetsk, since it is a town located near the road that leads to these strongholds.
