Bolsonaro undergoes surgery, the former Brazilian president leaves prison

The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro has been released from prison for the first time since the end of November and arrived at the hospital where Tomorrow he will undergo surgery. A source from the private Df Star clinic in Brasilia told AFP.

According to what the news agency found, a convoy of black cars escorted by motorbikes entered the hospital garage, where the former far-right leader, sentenced in September to 27 years in prison for attempted coup d’état, had already undergone surgery in April.

Meanwhile, the lower house of Congress has approved a bill in favor of reducing the prison sentence for the former president. The text now goes to the Senate which, if it were to rule in favor, would reduce the prison sentence to just over two years.

If the bill were promulgated, Bolsonaro would see his sentence reduced to around two years and four months. The legislation would also grant parole to approximately 100 Bolsonaro supporters jailed in connection with the attack on government buildings in Brasilia that occurred on January 8, 2023. The reformulation of sentences will be up to the judicial authority.
