The 34th anniversary of the liberation of the infamous enemy stronghold in the Homeland War and the camp for Croatian veterans and civilians, which was marked as one of the darkest episodes of the war, was marked by laying wreaths and lighting candles at the memorial in Bu&ccaronje near Pakrac on Friday.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Croatian Veterans Tomo Medved participated in the commemoration, as a representative of the Prime Minister, who said that Buje carries “a heavy burden of suffering, but also a strong message of victory”.
“Buč is a symbol of suffering, injustice and cruelty, but at the same time a symbol of resistance, courage and faith in freedom. Here, as part of the Papuk ’91 operation, one of the darkest episodes of the Homeland War ended,” said Medved on the occasion of laying wreaths at the memorial next to the chapel of St. Anton Abbot. At the same time, he recalled that in the Bučje camp, the imprisoned Croatian veterans and civilians were exposed to torture and inhumane conditions.
He pointed out that many prisoners did not live to freedom, while those who returned with their testimonies permanently obliged Croatian society that the truth about these events should never be forgotten or denied. “Today we remember the moment when the survivors were returned to their families and when evil and death were overcome by togetherness,” he added.
The liberation of Buč was part of the wider operation Papuk ’91, one of the key operations in the early phase of the Homeland War, which, along with operations Otkos 10 and Orkan 91, brought security to western Slavonia. In extremely difficult winter conditions and with limited armament, Croatian forces achieved important military and strategic goals, preventing the cutting of Croatian territory and the separation of Slavonia from the rest of the country.
Minister Medved reminded that the price of that victory was high – during the 37 days of the Papuk ’91 operation, 142 Croatian veterans were killed – and he remembered all those killed and missing in the Bučje camp, among them the doctor Dr. Ivan Šreter. He emphasized that the Ministry of Croatian Veterans continues its daily efforts in the search for all missing persons from the Homeland War.
In addition to the families of the dead and the participants of the operation, the commemoration was attended by the representative of the President of the Croatian Parliament Željko Glavić, the Czech-Slavonian županica Antonija Jozić, representatives of the surrounding towns and municipalities, the Church and associations arising from the Homeland War. The commanders of the 123rd and 136th brigades of the Croatian Army Željko Kali&cacute spoke on behalf of the military units. and Josip Černi, and the prayer for the killed, missing and deceased veterans and civilian victims was led by Reverend Mislav Jurakovi.
After the commemoration in Buč, Minister Medved toured the works on the reconstruction and arrangement of the Veterans Center in Pakrac, which will be the headquarters of the Public Institution Veterans Center, intended for long-term accommodation and support for Croatian veterans.
