Egypt, Türkiye and Somalia condemn Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland

Egypt, Türkiye and Somalia condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland by the State of Israel. Note that Israel became the first state in the world to recognize the independence of Somaliland.

The Republic of Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, but until now it has been unable to gain recognition from any UN member state. Somaliland is located in the northwestern part of what was formerly part of the British Protectorate of northern Somalia.

Somalia does not recognize the independence of Somaliland. Al Jazeera reports that following Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement, an urgent meeting of the Somali cabinet was convened to discuss the position on this issue.
