Millions to citizens of Somalia, the YouTuber’s investigation into fraud gets the governor into trouble

An investigation into businesses run in Minnesota by citizens originally from Somalia becomes a case on X and YouTube. The investigation by 23-year-old YouTuber Nick Shirley, assisted by a citizen – David – who identified data relating to state funds, turns the spotlight on the childcare and state-funded welfare sectors. In a 42-minute clip, Shirley condenses a series of inspections at alleged kindergartens and assistance centers, all apparently run by citizens of Somali origin.

The documents in the young man’s possession show that the structures have received millionaire funds for years: these are childcare centers that should welcome dozens of children, but on a weekday the structures are deserted. The same happens in numerous centers that should provide healthcare: they are closed or not active. At the end of the day, Shirley says the documented alleged frauds total more than $110 million.

The investigation bounces from one profile to another, collects millions of views and becomes a sensational online case. “This guy has produced more useful journalism than any of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize winners,” writes Vice President J.D. Vance. “What’s happening in Minnesota is a microcosm of the immigration fraud in our system. Politicians like this because they get power. Welfare people like it because they get rich. But it’s a zero-sum game, and so they steal both money and political power from Minnesotans,” Vance writes.

Elon Musk dedicates several posts to the topic on his social network

Hour after hour, while views grow at a frenetic pace, posts from senators and deputies arrive. Donald Trump jr, son of the president of the United States, also expresses his opinion: “If you haven’t seen it yet, watch it. Everything”, he writes, relaunching the video investigation. “Know that this is what journalists are supposed to do, but no one in the mainstream media will bother to look, let alone publish it. This is what they are doing to your country with your tax money,” he writes. One user’s first response sums up the general mood: “Dude, your dad is the president. Tell him to do something.”
