Berlin – It happens everywhere, but usually remains unspoken. On the street, at home, on the internet: violence against women is unfortunately everyday life in Germany. A new situation analysis by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reveals how dramatic the dimensions are.
Last year, 187,128 women and girls were victims of domestic violence – an increase of 3.5 percent compared to the previous year (2023: 180,715). Women between the ages of 30 and 60 are particularly affected (54.9%). “Domestic violence includes all forms of physical, sexual or psychological violence,” is how the BKA defines the acts in the study. The number of suspects rose to 152,812 people (+3.2 percent).
The raw numbers cannot express how every single woman affected by violence feels. Most of the time, the victims remain silent – out of fear of being judged or of what might happen to them.
