Yemen’s Saudi-backed Presidential Council said its forces had taken control of the country’s eastern Hadhramaut province, previously controlled by the Southern Transitional Council.
The governor of the province, Salam al-Khanbashi, said that he was resuming his work, but the administrative center would not be the capital of Hadhramaut, Mukalla, but the largest city of the province, Sayyun.
Control over Mukalla has not been fully established. Units of the United Arab Emirates-backed Southern Transitional Council retain control of the international airport, and Al-Khanbashi called on them to leave the complex.
