She wants to defend the sovereignty of the countries of her continent. America “does not belong to any doctrine or to any power”, declared Monday the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, after the spectacular American military operation on Saturday in Venezuela.
The Mexican leader’s comments come after Donald Trump justified the capture of his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolás Maduro by bringing the Monroe Doctrine up to date, considering that Latin America is the preserve of the United States.
He told the press that “the Monroe Doctrine is very important, but we have moved far beyond it.”
Priority to “the people”
“American domination in the Western Hemisphere will never again be called into question,” said the American president, who then threatened other left-wing governments in Latin America, including Cuba, Colombia and Mexico.
“Mexico firmly maintains that America does not belong to any doctrine or to any power,” replied the left-wing Mexican leader during her daily press conference.
“The American continent belongs to the people of each of the countries that form it,” added Claudia Sheinbaum.
Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, captured on Saturday in Caracas during a US military operation in the Venezuelan capital, are accused of drug trafficking in the United States where they were transferred. The deposed president arrived at the New York court for a first appearance on Monday.
