Following the resumption of US-brokered talks between Israel and Syria, sources in Damascus said they hoped to force an Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories in the Golan Heights in exchange for security guarantees, Channel 12 news service reported.
A Syrian source close to the country’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa said American pressure was pushing the parties toward a scheme that would include an Israeli withdrawal from Syrian territory in exchange for security guarantees “that would suit both sides.” He noted that the United States is interested in concluding an agreement as quickly as possible.
At the same time, the source emphasized that the agreement with Israel will not include any aspects regarding the Syrian Druze and what is happening in the Al-Sueida area, since “this moment will remain exclusively an internal matter of Syria.”
For Syria, this source argues, Israeli claims that “Israel is the patron and protector of minorities” are unacceptable, since the issue of minorities in Syria should be resolved exclusively within Syria.
