In the first session, the Church Improvement Council discussed the implementation of the road map. Pashinyan

“The first session of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church Renovation Council took place,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced in a Facebook post.

During the session, according to the Prime Minister, “the main directions of the Church’s improvement process, the organizational steps and the scope of the upcoming works were discussed, based on the principles and goals formulated in the founding statement.”

“The council emphasized the implementation of the process with the principles of inclusiveness, public trust, transparency and responsibility, emphasizing the need for steps aimed at uniting clergy and laity,” writes Pashinyan.

The Council also welcomed the decision of the Vicar of the Armenian Diocese of Switzerland, Most Reverend Gusan Alchanyan, to join the Church’s Restoration Statement and Road Map.

“At the meeting, actions aimed at the implementation of the road map were discussed and necessary decisions were made,” the Prime Minister said.

Pashinyan and the 10 archbishops and bishops demanding the removal of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II made a “Declaration on the renovation of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church” at the prime minister’s residence late on June 4, presenting a road map for the renovation and announcing the formation of the Coordinating Council.

The text contains the points previously presented by the Prime Minister, according to which, after the removal of the Reverend, a vicar is elected, a church charter is adopted, and then a new Catholicos is elected.

The Mother See countered the statement signed by the Prime Minister and 10 bishops, in particular, that “the actions taken by the head of the Armenian government under the pretext of regulating and improving the internal life of the Church directly violate the RA Constitution, violate the rights of the Church established both internationally and by Armenian legislation.”
