The EU should deploy a “small military force” in Greenland as a deterrent against Trump: enough words, a “strong” message is needed. This is what Guntram Wolff, senior fellow at the Bruegel think tank of which he was director until 2024, told Adnkronos. “In my opinion, it is important not only to declare that Greenland must decide on its own future but also offer Greenland and Denmark concrete support“, says the expert. In this context, he insists, “the deployment of a small European military force in Greenland would send a strong signal and would also help US legislators to contain the president of the United States. It is time for Europe to go beyond words“.
“Donald Trump’s attack to international law it has no precedent
for a democratic power“, he observes. “Although the United States has already interfered with international law in the past, it has at least tried to defend the principle of respect for it”, notes Wolff. But, observes the analyst, “even more important for Europe is the fact that it has never openly threatened to violate international law towards an ally”.
Today, Wolff points out, “the European Union and its member states now face not only the threat of Russia, but also that of a predatory United States, although the latter is still constrained by internal checks and balances.” But “Europe should not think that appeasement will change the opinion of the president of the United States. Historical experience suggests that it is important to say ‘no‘”, concludes the community policy expert.
