Venezuela announces the release of a “significant number” of Venezuelans and foreigners

The president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, announced this Thursday the release of a “significant number” of several imprisoned people, including both Venezuelan citizens and foreigners, a release process that “is occurring at this very moment.”

Rodríguez, who has not yet confirmed the number of people benefiting from the measure, made this announcement during a press conference in which he indicated that it was “a unilateral gesture to strengthen” his “unwavering decision to consolidate peace” in the country and “peaceful collusion”, without distinction of ideology or religion.

“Consider this gesture of the Bolivarian government, with a broad intention to search for peace, as the contribution that we all must make to ensure that our republic continues its peaceful life and in search of prosperity,” declared the president of the Venezuelan Parliament.

During his speech, he took the opportunity to thank “those who have always been there to defend” the right to “a full life, self-determination, independence and peace.” Thus, he thanked the former President of the Government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, “who for ten years has been combining all his capabilities to work together for national connivance.”

In addition, he had words of gratitude for the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the Qatari authorities. Internally, he has appreciated the disposition of “the State institutions, which have readily” responded to the call “of the Bolivarian Government of the acting president Delcy Rodríguez.”

This announcement came days after Donald Trump’s Administration launched an attack against the Latin American country, in which a hundred people died and resulted in the capture of the president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, first lady Cilia Flores. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has since been sworn in as acting president.
