The Italian Prime Minister does not believe that the US will attack Greenland

“I still do not believe in the hypothesis that the US will take military action to control Greenland. I definitely do not agree with this option. Such a move is not beneficial to anyone, including the US,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said at the annual press conference in Rome today.

According to her, the administration of President Donald Trump is taking very drastic measures, focusing above all on the strategic importance of Greenland and the Arctic region in general for Washington’s interests and security.

“I still believe that the message that the US wants to convey is that they will not accept excessive intervention from foreign actors in an area of ​​such special strategic significance to their security and interests,” the Italian Prime Minister emphasized.

Ms. Meloni said that not only Europe but also NATO need to “seriously discuss” to consider the Arctic as a priority issue. Italy is also developing an Arctic strategy, with goals including maintaining peace and security, supporting Italian companies to invest and promoting research, especially related to climate change.

“The best way to prevent problems is to ensure a serious and significant NATO presence in the Arctic, including Greenland. From there, we can together respond to concerns from the US side, which, as I understand it, is to not allow excessive interference from external actors, who may have hostile intentions,” the Italian leader added.

Greenland is the world’s largest island, located near North America, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. The island is an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark, with a population of 57,000 people and an area of ​​about 2.16 million square kilometers, larger than Mexico and more than three times larger than the US state of Texas.

The island lies on the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it an important strategic location for Washington. Greenland also has abundant mineral resources, most of which are untapped.

The US government has recently increased pressure to control Greenland after many months of lull. President Trump believes that the US needs the island for defense purposes and does not rule out military measures to achieve that goal.

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly stated that the island is not for sale. In polls, the majority of Greenlanders also do not want the island to be annexed by the United States.

Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and Denmark issued a joint statement on January 7 opposing the idea of ​​the US annexing Greenland, emphasizing that they will protect universal principles of “sovereignty, territorial integrity and border inviolability”.

Ms. Giorgia Meloni will take on the role of prime minister from 2022 and is the first woman to hold this position in Italy. Compared to many other European leaders, she has a good relationship with the US President and the two have similar views on a number of issues, including immigration. Ms. Meloni is the only European leader invited to attend Mr. Trump’s inauguration ceremony for his second term. At the Gaza summit in Egypt in October 2025, Mr. Trump praised Ms. Meloni as “beautiful”, very respected in Italy and a very successful politician.
