“The United States needs Greenland as part of its national security,” he indicated in a message on social networks, where he stressed that “NATO would be much more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the United States,” despite the fact that the island is a sovereign part of Denmark, already a member of the Alliance.

Thus, he has stressed that “NATO should lead the way” for the United States to annex the territory and has emphasized that, if this is not the case, “Russia or China will do it, something that is not going to happen.”

“Militarily, without the enormous power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term and which I now take to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective or deterrent force. Not even close,” he argued. “They know it and I know it too,” he added.

For this reason, the tenant of the White House has stated that a solution that does not involve the annexation of Greenland by the United States “is unacceptable”, given the rejection of the authorities of the island and Denmark for the North American country to take effective control of the territory, despite Trump’s repeated threats.

Just a few hours earlier, Trump himself rejected the statements of the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, after he reiterated that the island wants to remain under the sovereignty of Denmark, and stated that this position “is going to be a big problem for him.” “I don’t know who he is or I know anything about him, but that’s going to be a big problem for him,” he remarked.

Nielsen highlighted on Tuesday in a press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that Greenland wants to remain within “Denmark, the European Union (EU) and NATO.” “This is not the time for divisions and discussions, it is the time to stay united and continue building based on the community we already have,” he argued.

The Prime Minister of Greenland also regretted Trump’s “unacceptable” threats against the island and recognized that it is “a geopolitical crisis.” “Greenland hopes that the dialogue will flow with respect and always taking into account the constitutional position of Greenland, as well as International Law and the right of the population to self-determination,” he concluded.
