Death toll in protests in Iran rises to more than 3,400, according to activists

The NGO Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) has put this Wednesday at more than 3,400 deaths and “thousands” more injuries as a result of the repression by the security forces of the Central Asian country during the anti-government protests that began more than two weeks ago and that in recent days have been marked by a national Internet blackout.

According to data collected by Norway-based IHRNGO, at least 3,428 people have died in 15 provinces since the start of demonstrations in late December 2025 to protest economic conditions.

The figure, as he has highlighted, “only includes cases verified” directly by IHRNGO or through two independent sources and supported by hospital and funeral documentation.

Most of the deceased were under 30 years of age, and at least 15 were minors, he stated. However, the NGO is trying to obtain documentation that confirms the exact age of all the fatalities.

The day before, the non-governmental organization Human Rights Activists (HRA), based in the United States, raised the death toll to 1,850, including nine children, while reporting the arrest of more than 16,700 people.

Iranian authorities have accused the United States and Israel of fueling the protests and supporting the unrest, claiming that the demonstrations led to violence to give an “excuse” to US President Donald Trump to intervene militarily in the Central Asian country.
