Frost comeback in Germany: the next onset of winter is imminent

Germany breathes a sigh of relief after winter storm “Elli”. The sun is out, the temperatures are mild at times. Instead of tobogganing fun, walks are on the agenda – almost with a feeling of spring. But it doesn’t stay that way.

“It definitely looks like it could get colder again soon,” says qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung to BILD. “We can expect from this Sunday frostier temperatures again around 0 degrees. Only about 0 to 1 degree plus. But this is not yet the real onset of winter.”

Why it’s getting cold again

Reason for the new one Cold burst is air from the east. “This eastern air could move even closer to us over the next week and then reach central and southern Germany,” explains Jung. The result: slight permanent frost in some parts of the country. At night it can then cool down to between minus 4 and minus 11 degrees.

A winter comeback like storm “Elli” But the meteorologist doesn’t expect it. “It won’t Winter with ice, snow and chaos,” says Jung clearly. And adds: “So far there is no snow in sight!”

When the frost will reach us

There is currently a high pressure area over Eastern Europe. It ensures dryness cold – with little or no rainfall. “Under certain circumstances, this influx of cold could increase on January 24th or 25th,” said Jung. Then a permanent easterly flow with slightly sub-zero temperatures during the day and minus 5 to minus 10 degrees at night is possible.

There is no snow this time

But it won’t be quite as icy as in the past few weeks. The reason: There is a lack of snow. “Without snow, it cools down less,” explains Jung. It will still be cold. “It is not yet clear whether some snow will sneak in.”

The outlook for the second half of January is clear: after the current easing, it will be frostier again. “It is not yet entirely clear when exactly this will begin. It varies depending on the weather model,” says Jung. But a point in time is emerging. “It should start slowly from Sunday.” His conclusion: “So far it only looks like cold, not snow.”
