Trump considers taxing countries opposed to annexing Greenland

According to information from the Associated Press agency, the Republican president spoke about the subject during an event at the White House, in which he recalled having already threatened European countries with tariffs on pharmaceutical products.

“I can do it for Greenland too,” Trump said. “I can impose tariffs on countries that don’t agree on (the idea of ​​the US annexing) Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security. So I can do that.”

The American president and members of his government have reiterated that the United States needs to control Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, to prevent the actions of China and Russia in the Western Hemisphere. Trump has not ruled out using force to achieve that goal.

The United States’ intention generated revolt among NATO allies and in recent days the governments of the Netherlands, France, Germany, Norway and Sweden announced the sending of troops to Greenland for joint military exercises.

On Wednesday (14), the foreign ministers of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and Greenland, Vivian Motzfeldt, participated in a meeting on the subject at the White House with the US Vice President, JD Vance, and the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

At the end of the meeting, the European foreign ministers reported that there are still “fundamental differences”, but that a working group with the United States will be created to address the issue.
