Trump threatens tariffs in Greenland dispute

Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to incorporate Greenland into the United States and has not ruled out military action.

Large protests against US claims of ownership expected

Large protests are expected in Denmark and Greenland on Saturday against Trump’s claims to ownership of Greenland. Thousands of people have announced on online networks that they will take part in the protests organized by Greenlandic associations in Copenhagen, Nuuk and other cities. In Copenhagen there is to be a protest march to the US embassy under the motto “Hands off Greenland”. In Greenland, the protests are under the motto “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders”.

The island, which is rich in raw materials, is an autonomous part of Denmark and therefore belongs to NATO. Several NATO countries have sent soldiers to Greenland at Denmark’s request. Previously, a crisis meeting between the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland with US Vice President JD Vance and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio in Washington had remained inconclusive.

In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly claimed US ownership of Greenland and justified this with US national security interests in the Arctic. There was talk of buying the Arctic island, but Trump did not rule out military force.
