Peace Council for Gaza: who are its members, responsible for “governing” the territory “during its transition”?

Donald Trump declared Thursday that the Gaza Peace Council had been formed, a central step in the American plan for the Palestinian territory. This Friday, the American president appointed Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Marco Rubio, his Secretary of State.

American special envoy Steve Witkoff is also part of it, as is the son-in-law of the American president Jared Kushner and the president of the World Bank Ajay Banga, according to a list of members published this Friday in a press release. Ali Shaath, a civil engineer and former senior civil servant, was chosen to lead it.

This council will have the mission of supervising a temporary and apolitical Palestinian committee composed of 15 technocrats, the White House indicated. The American president emphasized Thursday in his Social Truth that “as president of the Peace Council,” he supported this transitional committee of experts whose mission will be “to govern Gaza during its transition.”

The American plan entered phase two

Phase two of the US plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip took effect on Wednesday. It must lead to “the reconstruction” of the Palestinian territory, according to Steve Witkoff.

Donald Trump had insisted, in this context, on the importance of a “COMPLETE demilitarization agreement with Hamas”. “Hamas must IMMEDIATELY honor its commitments, in particular the return of the last body to Israel,” added the American president, Israel accusing Hamas of delaying the handover of the remains of policeman Ran Gvili.

The Trump plan also provides for the deployment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) responsible for helping secure Gaza and training Palestinian police units.
