Syrian state media reported that an agreement on an immediate ceasefire had been reached between government forces and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). According to the agreement, the Kurdish forces transfer the territories and natural resources that were at their disposal to the control of the Syrian government. This agreement could become a turning point in the long-term confrontation between Damascus and Kurdish structures in the north of the country.
The truce was preceded by a rapid offensive by the Syrian army against SDF positions in the northern regions. In a lightning-fast operation, government forces captured the strategically important city of Tabqa, advancing towards the key city of Raqqa. The successful offensive of the Syrian forces created the preconditions for negotiations and actually confronted the Kurdish forces with the need to seek a political solution to the conflict.
Asharq Al-Awsat wrote that the agreement provides for the integration of the SDF into the Syrian army.
