Poland sends 17 million war manuals

Olsztyn (Poland) – Fortunately, the emergency has not yet occurred, but the fear of a war with Russia is palpable among our Polish neighbors. The government is currently sending 17 million safety manuals to households across the country. In the brochure, citizens learn how to protect themselves in the event of air attacks, chemical or nuclear threats.

Ukraine war scares people

The manuals have been sent out since the end of December, initially to the Warmian-Masurian administrative districts (bordering on Russia), Podlaskie (borders with Belarus) and Lublin (borders with Belarus and the Ukraine). In the 52-page manual (“Security Guide”in German: “Safety Guide”), people also get tips on how to deal with natural disasters or power outages. The most threatening scenario, however, is that of an attack from Russia.

“Every Pole has a duty to defend the fatherland, but the fatherland also has a duty to provide the infrastructure to protect everyone Poland to protect,” says Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński (49) about the publication. The book says that the war beyond the eastern border in Ukraine is affecting Poles’ sense of security.

Practical tips for emergencies

In the handbook, the government provides practical tips for protection in the event of an emergency or war. It describes, for example, what belongs in an evacuation backpack. Anyone who cannot find shelter should seek shelter behind load-bearing walls.

In the event of an air raid, it says: “If you hear an explosion outdoors, drop to the ground – ideally in a hollow or depression – and protect your head.” And for a nuclear threat: “Close and seal windows, vents, and the dampers on stoves and fireplaces. Turn off the air conditioning.”
