Ruhana was born in mid-December at the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee. She is a Sumatran orangutan, an endangered species. Only 13,000 to 14,500 monkeys of this species are believed to remain in the wild. The birth of a new young one is therefore very welcome. Ru is only the second Sumatran orangutan to be born at the Memphis Zoo in ten years.
Caesarean section
It’s not just the numbers that make her birth special, but also the manner in which: the baby monkey was born with a pre-planned and months-prepared caesarean section. The zoo did not report why surgery was necessary.

Cesarean sections in orangutans are very unusual, prompting the zoo to assemble a large team of top specialists, including veterinarians, a gynecologist and even a neonatal nurse. The operation was not entirely without problems. After Ruhana left her mother’s belly, her body temperature dropped. Jahe had to recover and could not hold her baby against her, as is natural. Fortunately, after a while in the incubator, Ruhana was able to cope again.
For the first eight days of her life, Ruhana was fed and cared for by a team of caregivers while Jahe recovered. The zookeepers wore hand-crocheted scarves, allowing Ru to practice the natural grasping movements of orangutan babies.
In the meantime, baby and mother have been reunited, but they are still in isolation. Visitors do not yet get to see the cute duo, only on Instagram. Touching videos, photos and updates are regularly shared there. Ruhanna will undoubtedly become a crowd favorite once she is on display.
