In Spain, rescue and search work continues at the site of a collision between two high-speed passenger trains in the province of Cordoba, near the village of Adamuz. At least 39 people were killed, according to the latest official data, and authorities warn that the number of victims could rise as the rubble is cleared and the bodies found are identified.
The disaster occurred on the evening of January 18: a train of the private operator Iryo, traveling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed and ended up on the oncoming track, after which a Renfe train traveling from Madrid to Huelva crashed into it. As a result of the impact, the carriages of both trains were derailed.
Spanish media write about hundreds of victims, dozens of them are hospitalized, many in serious condition.
Train traffic on the section between Madrid and Andalusia is temporarily suspended.
The causes of the disaster are being established.
Spain’s transport minister called the incident “strange,” noting that the accident happened on a straight section of a recently upgraded line and when trains were operating within established speed limits.
