Berlin’s left-wing top candidate for the House of Representatives election, Elif Eralp, recommends her party in Neukölln to focus on issues such as rising rents in the election campaign. The election for the district council (BVV) is also coming up in September. On Saturday, the Left District Association of Neukölln elected the BVV parliamentary group leader Ahmed Abed as district mayoral candidate, who was repeatedly accused of anti-Israel positions.
“Neukölln needs a district mayor who will take care of the district’s pressing challenges, in particular the sharply rising rents, cleanliness in public spaces and social coexistence,” said the left-wing politician. “And I expect that Ahmed Abed will make this the focus of his election campaign.”
Sharp criticism of Abed’s behavior
“The decision about candidacies for election to the district council assemblies is solely the responsibility of the respective district association,” said Eralp.
Abed has Palestinian roots and works as a lawyer in Neukölln. In mid-October, he was noticed during a visit by the mayor of Neukölln’s Israeli twin town of Bat Yam, Tzvika Brot, who belongs to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing conservative Likud party.
Abed accused him of genocide in connection with the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip after the Hamas terrorist attack. Abed’s appearance in the town hall was sharply criticized by district mayor Martin Hikel (SPD) and the CDU opposition, among others. Abed’s candidacy for mayor made some headlines over the weekend.
