The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated this Tuesday that although they do not expect to suffer a military attack from the United States, he has asked the island’s inhabitants to prepare “for the worst.”
“You have to be prepared for the worst, even if it is unlikely,” Nielsen warned in a press conference with the Minister of Economy, Múte Bourup Egede, to report the latest developments regarding this crisis, the same day that a Danish military contingent arrived on the island.
For his part, Egede has highlighted that “the entire society is affected emotionally and mentally” by what is happening. “We all feel it,” said the Minister of Economy, who has asked Greenlanders to be prepared for “even more pressure,” according to the local weekly ‘Sermitsiaq’.
“Although it does not seem that military force will be used, we must prepare for everything, because the nation that is pressuring us has not changed its mind,” he noted in reference to US President Donald Trump, who plans to address the issue this Wednesday with “the different parties” in Davos, during the World Economic Forum.
“We must be prepared and generate security in society. Although it may seem unlikely, we will be prepared for anything that may happen,” said Egede, who recalled that Washington has not ruled out the possibility of a military intervention on the island.
Meanwhile, Greenland will continue to exhaust diplomatic channels with Washington. Nielsen has assessed as “good progress” the talks about increasing the US military presence on the island to meet those security demands that Trump appeals to to justify a possible annexation.
