Putin will meet this Thursday with envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss the invasion of Ukraine

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, will hold a meeting this Thursday with the United States special envoy, Steve Witkoff, as confirmed by the Kremlin, within the framework of international contacts to achieve a peace agreement in Ukraine, the target of a Russian invasion since February 2022.

“Yes, we can confirm it,” said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dimitri Peskov, in statements to the newspaper ‘Izvestia’, one day after the meeting held in the Swiss city of Davos between Witkoff and Putin’s special representative and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dimitriev.

Witkoff himself described the meeting with Dimitriev as “very positive”, while the Russian representative celebrated that “the dialogue is constructive and more and more people understand the fairness of the Russian position”, without the Government of Ukraine having commented for now on these contacts.

Peskov has thus reacted to statements given by Witkoff to the American television network CNBC in which he revealed that he will meet with Putin on Thursday to talk about Ukraine, with “exchanges of territory” on the table, without Moscow having commented on the matter.

Thus, he stressed that there has been “a lot of progress” during “the last six or eight weeks” of talks, mediated by the United States, while affirming that Jared Kushner, son-in-law of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, will also participate in the meeting with Putin.

“We’ll see the Russians, Jared and I, sometime Thursday afternoon,” said Witkoff, who stressed that Washington “is getting everyone closer” toward an agreement. “We hope to have something good to announce soon,” he argued, before stating that he believes Putin is willing to reach an agreement.

Witkoff explained that during the talks the 20-point peace proposal presented by Trump has been “harmonized” and added that “now it is about the territory agreements”, in reference to possible land exchanges that would reconfigure the international border between Ukraine and Russia.

“This has been the elephant in the room. I think there are some very, very good ideas around this and I hope that we will be able to make some progress on this point,” concluded the United States special envoy, spearhead of the Trump Administration’s efforts to achieve a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
