Donald Trump canceled the invitation of the Prime Minister of Canada to the Peace Council

President Trump responded to the criticism in a social media post that was worded as an official letter to Carney. “Please accept this letter as notification that the Peace Council is withdrawing its invitation for Canada to join what will be the most prestigious Council of Leaders ever established,” the president wrote. Earlier, the President referred to the words of the Canadian Prime Minister and noted that Canada should show gratitude, as it “exists thanks to the United States”.

According to a report in the “New York Times”, diplomatic relations between the old neighbors are at an unprecedented low. In the last year, President Trump took an aggressive line towards Canada, which included trade wars, threats of imposing tariffs and even statements about the possibility of annexing the neighboring country. The situation led to significant economic damage, when Canadian citizens began boycotting American products and tourist destinations in the United States. The instability also calls into question the future of the Continental Free Trade Agreement.

In response to the cancellation of the invitation and according to the president, Carney gave a speech to the nation in which he emphasized the importance of the economic and security partnership between the countries, but clarified: “Canada does not exist because of the United States. Canada prospers because of us being Canadians.”
