The US Department of Defense has published a new national defense strategy. It states that in the foreseeable future, Russia will remain a “permanent but manageable threat” to NATO’s eastern member states.
“Despite the fact that Russia faces various demographic and economic difficulties, the ongoing war in Ukraine shows that it still has significant reserves of military and industrial power,” the document said.
According to the new strategy, the Pentagon will “ensure the readiness of American forces to defend against Russian threats to the United States homeland” and “continue to play an important role in NATO.”
A separate chapter of the strategy is dedicated to China, which is called “the second most powerful country in the world”, which is “second only to the United States”. According to the document, one of the Pentagon’s goals is to contain China in the Indo-Pacific region “through force, not confrontation.”
