Spranger wants to change Berlin laws after a power outage

“Data protection is defined too narrowly. For example, it must be possible to keep an emergency register that records which people in need of care in Berlin are being cared for at home and where that is,” said Spranger. “In this way, we ensure that they can be visited in times of crisis and are not left to fend for themselves.”

More intervention rights for internal administration

“We also have to change the Disaster Protection Act,” said the SPD politician. “The Senate Department for the Interior and Sport must be given the right to intervene with the districts in order to be able to order and control disaster preparedness in a binding manner,” said Spranger.

“It would be comparable to the regulations in the state election law: the state must be able to issue binding orders so that we can ensure uniformity and efficiency in crisis preparedness,” explained the Interior Senator. “We need that here too. I only want to intervene at the district level when it is necessary.”

At the federal level, there must also be changes with regard to the previously applicable transparency obligations, said Spranger. They are convinced that more restraint will be necessary in the future when publishing data on sensitive infrastructure such as the Berlin power grid. “At the Berlin state level, we must change the Berlin Freedom of Information Act and exempt security data from the publication requirement.”
