The European Union welcomes the agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF

The European Union welcomed the agreement concluded between the Syrian government and the Kurdish Autonomous Administration, and called for its implementation “in good faith and consensus.” European Union diplomatic spokesman Anwar al-Anouni said: “A complete cessation of hostilities is necessary to allow the provision of humanitarian aid, the protection of civilians, and the return of internally displaced persons.” The bloc also called on both parties to “ensure the security of the camps and detention centers and work to prevent the return of the terrorist organization ISIS.” The two sides reached the agreement under a ceasefire between their forces that began on January 20, following weeks of tension and clashes during which the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) lost control.
