Iranian authorities: the names of 2,986 people killed during the “bitter events” have been established

The office of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is releasing a list of the names of 2,986 people killed in the January unrest. It contains both demonstrators and security personnel. Another 131 people remain unidentified.

“All of them are children of our homeland, and each of them will be remembered. The President considers himself a defender of their rights,” the statement says, declaring a commitment to the principles of transparency and responsibility. It is emphasized that the data was verified by both forensic experts and citizen registration authorities.

“Unlike our enemies and historical enemies, we do not trade around the death toll to score political points. From the point of view of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, all the victims of these bitter events are not just a number. Every Iranian for us is the embodiment of Iran itself,” the presidential office adds.

The statement repeated the previous official estimate that a total of 3,117 people had died. The Iranian opposition says up to 36,500 people may have been killed in a brutal crackdown on opposition protests by the ayatollah’s regime’s security services.
