Tomašević announced the referendum: Everyone from the opposition will collect signatures

– Let’s push it to the end. If this precedent can pass, then the Government can do whatever it wants. It is no longer bound by the Constitution or the laws passed by the Croatian Parliament, which the Government is obliged to implement – the mayor said.

He announced that at the City Assembly, on February 24, he would submit another request for constitutionality assessment related to the Law on Spatial Planning.

If the Constitutional Court does not make a decision within 30 days, the entire progressive opposition will go to collect signatures for the referendum. Then the citizens themselves will decide whether all this was in accordance with the Constitution or an encroachment on the autonomy of local self-government.

In order to initiate a referendum, it is necessary to collect the signatures of at least 10% of all voters in the Republic of Croatia within 15 days.

After collecting the signatures, the competent authority checks their validity and number, and if the legal requirements are met, the Croatian Parliament calls a referendum. Before that, the Constitutional Court can evaluate whether the referendum question is in accordance with the Constitution. All Croatian citizens over the age of 18 have the right to vote.

The decision at the referendum is decided by the majority of the voters who participated in it, and the Constitution stipulates that the decision made at the referendum is binding.
