Firefighters in Greece are battling a massive forest fire that has erupted on the tourist island of Thassos, forcing the evacuation of a village threatened by fire.
The fire brigade said that six firefighting planes and six helicopters, and hundreds of firefighters, volunteers and military units, were deployed to put out the fire.
It is noteworthy that the island, which is located in the north of the Aegean Sea, is densely forested.
Local media reported that thick clouds of smoke could be seen from afar in the morning.
No one was injured so far from the fire, the island’s governor, Lefteris Kyriakides, told state radio.
According to the Civil Defense Force, there are more than 13,000 hectares of land destroyed by fires in Greece this year so far.
Many of the fires that break out in the country are considered deliberate. Forecasters say climate change is a factor in fueling the fires.
