According to the report, the logistics of the meeting were accompanied by many tensions in the last few days. The talks were initially supposed to take place in Istanbul with the participation of representatives from Arab countries, but Iran demanded at the last minute that they be moved to Oman and limited to a bilateral format with Trump representatives only. In Tehran they feared that a wide participation would turn the event into a political “show” and put them at a disadvantage against the regional coalition. In the end, a compromise was reached through the mediation of the countries of the region: the United States agreed to hold the meeting in Oman without additional regional parties, and in return Iran agreed to expand the discussion beyond the nuclear issue to other security issues such as the proxy organizations supported by it.
The Iranian decision comes against the background of intense internal upheaval. The protesters demanded the end of the rule of the Islamic Republic, and the regime responded with a heavy hand. At the same time, the local currency recorded a sharp drop against the dollar, a fact that increased the economic instability in the country and weakened Tehran’s bargaining position.
The mediators also propose a non-aggression pact between Washington and Tehran, under which Iran will undertake not to transfer military technologies to its allies and not to initiate the use of ballistic missiles.
