The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in January 2026, attacks were carried out on the Kapustin Yar training ground in the Astrakhan region of Russia, where, according to the Ukrainian side, the Oreshnik missile systems are based.
According to the report, hangar-type building complexes where pre-launch preparation of medium-range intercontinental ballistic missiles take place were attacked. Ukrainian-made Flamingo cruise missiles were used for the strikes.
“According to available information, on the territory of the training ground, some of the buildings received varying degrees of damage, one of the hangars was significantly damaged, and some of the personnel were evacuated from the territory,” the Ukrainian Armed Forces say.
Ukrainian authorities claimed that on January 9, the Russian army used an Oreshnik missile to strike the Lviv region. The launch took place from the Kapustin Yar test site.
