Russia affirms that the US is willing to end the “deep causes” that motivated the war in Ukraine

The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, assured this Tuesday that the United States Government is willing to participate in ending the “deep causes” that motivated the war in Ukraine and that Moscow places in the persecution suffered by the ethnic Russian population in the east and southeast of the country.

“The root causes will not disappear if we do not take into account the task of eliminating them in any peace treaty,” the Foreign Minister reiterated in an interview for the NTV television channel, in which he was convinced that Washington takes Moscow’s arguments into account.

Lavrov explained that Moscow’s military representatives in the negotiations that have been taking place yesterday in Abu Dhabi consider that the points that have been raised to end the conflict are complex and diverse, which is why a more careful and detailed approach is required.

In that sense, he has pointed out that when the United States forces its “clientele” in Europe and Ukraine “to act appropriately”, the application of the peace agreement that is achieved must be carried out under “exhaustive and precise coordination” and even “through military channels.”

Lavrov has taken the opportunity to once again accuse Brussels and kyiv of “unbalancing” the United States representatives in these talks and has highlighted the case of leaders such as the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who has explicitly declared “that Europe must prepare for war against Russia.”

Likewise, the head of Russian diplomacy has criticized Europe’s influence over Ukraine and has accused the United Kingdom of having hindered the agreements that were reached in April 2022 in Istanbul, just two months after the start of the invasion. “The Ukrainians were forced to abandon them,” he said.

Lavrov has pointed out that Europe cannot expect Russia to accept a peace plan based on an immediate ceasefire and security guarantees for Ukraine that must explain for what purpose and to whom they are being offered.
