New ban at carnival: No more confetti at carnival in Tuttlingen

Tuttlingen – The fools in Tuttlingen north of Lake Constance are angry. Reason: The city has banned confetti at the annual street parade. For the first time, the colorful pieces of paper are no longer allowed to fly. The authorities’ reason: mountains of garbage grow year after year and a high level of cleaning effort is required – especially in wet weather.

A city spokesman explains: “The ban was enacted because year after year there were problems with ever-increasing amounts of confetti. If it’s muddy and wet, the stuff can stick in every joint for weeks.” The trouble then comes from the construction yard, which is already very busy in the winter.

The town hall says: Such regulations have been in place for a long time in other municipalities. “We thought it wasn’t a big deal,” the city said. Because there is no confetti more traditional Part of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet.

But there are negative comments, especially on social networks. However, direct criticism hardly reaches the city. Instead, there is more praise from parade visitors who are looking forward to not having to spend weeks fumbling confetti out of their coats, hoods, cars and apartments this year.

The fools don’t think much of the ban

The local fools, on the other hand, are not very enthusiastic. Sonja Vogler, President of the Tuttlingen Narrenzunft Honberger, told the “Schwäbische Zeitung”: “There will be no clean streets during parades.” All participating clubs have already been informed about the ban for the parade next Saturday.

The German Environmental Aid (DUH), on the other hand, supports the confetti ban. For environmentalists, confetti is “a serious environmental problem.” A spokesman explains: Variants made of plastic or with glitter are particularly problematic. They are an absolute no-go because, as microplastics, they remain in the environment for a long time, end up in water bodies and ultimately also in the food chain.

Paper confetti is also problematic

But paper confetti can also be problematic due to dyes and sheer mass. According to environmentalists, an environmentally friendly carnival should be free of confetti. Of course, this also applies to Carnival.
