On December 11, 2025, the Colombian man was caught shoplifting by security at Maasmechelen Village. The man had put two Armani jackets in a garbage bag. In total, the garments had a value of 388 euros. During the search, the security officers found a notebook in which certain items of clothing were listed. “The clothing was then sent to Colombia,” said the Tongeren prosecutor.
Companion who fled
According to the prosecutor, the man did not act alone. “Magnets, cutting pliers and a passport of a escaped companion were found in his car,” the prosecutor said last month. The arrested suspect said that he and his companion stayed in Paris and came to Belgium and the Netherlands to look for work. “But I don’t think that’s right. I think they deliberately came here to steal,” the prosecutor continued.
The Tongeren judge found the man in his fifties guilty of the theft. He receives a suspended prison sentence of one year and a fine of 208 euros. His companion was never caught and therefore could not be convicted.
