Ukraine confirms 584 million in military aid through NATO but warns that it will need 15 billion

Ukraine confirmed this Wednesday that it has received $584 million in military aid through weapons purchases from the United States, within the framework of the PURL initiative launched by NATO, although it has warned that it will need a total of $15 billion in military aid to hold out on the battlefront in 2026.

In a message on social networks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the contributions of the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland and Latvia, estimating a total of $584 million in aid committed through the NATO mechanism, known as the Ukrainian Priority Requirements List, PURL.

In any case, Zelensky has stressed that the Ukrainian military need this year amounts to 15 billion dollars, key to keeping kyiv in the battle. “This will help deprive Russia of the leverage of air terror, and we encourage all security stakeholders to join and expand their contributions to PURL,” he stressed.

The Ukrainian leader has claimed that the initiative launched by NATO “remains a reliable mechanism” to have air defense missiles that counter “in the most effective way” Russian ballistic threats. “This allows us to protect our energy network during the cold winter,” he explained.

In this sense, he thanked all the countries that participate in this framework of support for kyiv, noting that he hopes that the program “continues to function effectively.”

Last summer, NATO launched a new mechanism to support the Ukrainian Army through the acquisition of weapons from the United States, after negotiations with Germany and the Donald Trump Administration. Initially, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Canada joined this plan, in addition to Berlin. Later, more allies have joined, including Spain.
