In an interview with France Inter, the Lyon prosecutor’s office specified that Jacques-Elie Favrot, parliamentary assistant to La France Insoumise (LFI) MP Raphaël Arnault, whose name was mentioned by some witnesses, is among those arrested in Isère. While in custody, Favrot has “ceased all his parliamentary activities”, Arnault wrote in X, specifying that he had started “the procedures for terminating the contract” on Monday.

Speaking on France Info this morning, French government spokeswoman Maud Bregeon urged La France Insoumise to exclude, “at least temporarily”, LFI MP Raphaël Arnault from its group. “Political leaders must urge calm, pacification, non-violence”, underlined the president of the National Assembly, Yael Braun Pivet, to La Matinale on Tf1. Jean-Luc Mélenchon “does not utter words of pacification”.

“The killing of the young Quentin Deranque in France is a fact that shocks and deeply saddens. The death of a boy in his early twenties, attacked by groups attributable to left-wing extremism and overwhelmed by a climate of ideological hatred that crosses various nations, is a wound for the whole of Europe”, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote in the meantime on her social media channels.

“No political idea, no ideological opposition can justify violence or transform confrontation into physical aggression. When hatred and violence take the place of dialogue, democracy always loses”, concludes Meloni.
