Syria closes al-Hol camp where jihadist families were held

The Syrian authorities have begun evacuating the remaining residents of the Al-Hol camp located in the province of al-Hasakah, where families of militants of the Islamic State terrorist group were kept. Until recently, the camp was under the control of Kurdish militias.

The largest such camp in Syria was transferred to government control in January under the terms of an agreement between the central government and the Syrian Democratic Forces. The agreement marked the destruction of the autonomy created by the Kurds in the northeast of the country.

About 24,000 people lived in the camp, most of whom were citizens of Syria and Iraq. However, 6,000 people were from 40 other countries, including Russia. After Kurdish militias removed the guards, thousands of people fled the camp.
