War in Ukraine: Ukrainian fighters will use their combat experience to train German soldiers

When Ukrainian soldiers become real references. The German Ministry of Defense wants to deploy combat-hardened Ukrainian soldiers as quickly as possible to train the German armed forces and thus strengthen the operational capacity of its troops.

According to a German army spokesperson, the plan is to “integrate the experience of Ukrainian soldiers into the military training provided at army training schools”, Der Spiegel reported on Monday.

If the army refused to comment on the details for obvious security reasons, several sources within the Bundeswehr indicated to the German media that negotiations with Ukraine have been underway since 2025.

Ukrainian soldiers will be tasked with sharing their practical knowledge with their German counterparts by sharing their combat experience against Russia, particularly in terms of the use of drones and their defense techniques against enemy attacks. “Currently, no NATO country has as rich combat experience as Ukraine. We must take advantage of it,” officers confided.

Enriching mutual training

Several thousand Ukrainian soldiers have stayed in Germany since the start of the Russian invasion to undergo training for several weeks on Bundeswehr military grounds. The German army had also trained several hundred Ukrainian soldiers in the use of weapons systems supplied by Berlin to kyiv as military aid.

According to sources within the German army, Ukrainian soldiers could even share their experience on German-supplied weapon systems. Ukrainian skills in modern command systems should also be important for the German armed forces. Since the start of the war, the Ukrainian army has developed simple systems via mobile applications for combat planning, control of its units on the ground, logistics and even the evacuation of the wounded.
