Strangers called the man, who lives in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and convinced him that his daughter was responsible for a car crash that allegedly killed the pregnant daughter of a Serbian diplomat, a police spokesman said.
The criminals asked for money or valuables to satisfy the diplomat, police said. They obtained jewelry, watches, cash and gold during “two handover events,” said the spokesperson, who declined to provide further details because of the ongoing investigation.
The police have set up an investigation committee to investigate the incident and are in close contact with the victim and his family.
