Mattarella remembers Bachelet 100 years after his birth: "The Republic is grateful for his example"

“The Republic is grateful to Vittorio Bachelet for his work and his example”. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Vittorio Bachelet.

“Vice President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, Bachelet worked hard to ensure that the democratic system was able to defeat the threat posed by terrorism to the civil coexistence of the country, without giving in to extraordinary measures, leveraging the constitutional principles that govern the judicial function”. President Mattarella underlined.

“On the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Vittorio Bachelet, the Republic pays homage to his memory and the legacy of his civic commitment and his cultural contribution. Vittorio Bachelet, a jurist of high value, was able to combine dedication to knowledge and research with active social participation and with experiences of great commitment first in the Italian Catholic University Federation and later in Catholic Action. Vittorio Bachelet’s method was based on discussion and on conciliation, not easy to implement in the years in which he operated, marked by conflict and violence”. Added the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who continued: “He interpreted the roles held in institutions and associations in line with the ideals of democracy and pluralism that accompanied him throughout his life. Bachelet has always seen dialogue as a precious source of collective enrichment, as well as an essential tool for the protection of the common good”.

“He was cowardly murdered on 12 February 1980 at the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’, at the end of a lesson, in the precious activity of teaching with which he had trained generations of students who had the privilege of being custodians of his teachings, in the belief that culture was an effective means to defeat every form of oppression and arrogance”. Mattarella concluded.
