Ukraine, in the bunker where he hid 4 years ago: Zelensky shows it for the first time

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made public, for the first time in a video, the top secret bunker where he took refuge at the outbreak of the war launched by Russia four years ago.

At the beginning of Zelensky’s speech to the nation, the video shows a long windowless corridor with a sign that reads ‘Office of the President of Ukraine’. An Orthodox icon then appears on a wall with the representation of the Ukrainian national symbol, the Tryzub, underneath.

“It is in this office, in this small room in the bunker on Bankova Street, that I had my first conversations with world leaders at the beginning of the war. Here I spoke with President Biden, and it was here that I heard him say to me: Volodymyr, there is a threat. You need to leave Ukraine urgently. We are ready to help you. And here I replied that I need ammunition, not a passage” to get out of the country, Zelensky said.

Bankova Street is located in the heart of Kiev’s government district and has been where the presidential offices have been located since Ukraine’s independence in 1991.
